About Plant a Seed Day!
In 2019, Big Green made up a holiday. We set it on the first day of spring, called it Plant a Seed Day, and said: everyone is invited. Put a seed in dirt. On this day, all together. It's that simple. A seed going into dirt costs almost nothing, takes minutes, and requires no expertise. You can do it in a paper cup on a windowsill, and we know this because people send us photos of exactly that every year.
But here's what we've learned: that modest act is one of the most powerful things a person can do. Once someone has grown something, anything, something shifts in how they relate to food. It is the beginning of a lot of things. You can be the reason that beginning is possible for someone.
The people closest to the food system's problems are already working on solutions. That's what Big Green's network of community-led nonprofits does every day.
